As part of the PACT (Permanent Affordability Commitment Together) revitalization initiative, our work on this project renews Rangel’s architecture and infrastructure through comprehensive exterior and interior renovations, landscape restoration, and system upgrades. Our team’s design efforts prioritize sustainability and resilience, with energy-efficient MEP systems, LED lighting, both interior and exterior accessible community spaces, and materials chosen for durability and reduced environmental impact.

At Rangel Houses, nestled in low-lying land by the Harlem River, prior resiliency work such as raising utilities above the floodplain established a foundation for further upgrades across the campus. Through careful, tenant-in‑place renovation of apartments and building exteriors, the Rangel Houses transformation will provide resilient, energy‑efficient housing to help strengthen the social and architectural fabric of Northern Harlem. To this end, community-oriented spaces are thoughtfully reimagined: social facilities in one building receive new finishes, accessible restrooms, and refined lighting to serve as community space for the entire complex, while another building’s social rooms are adapted into contemporary offices for the property management company. The renovation and rehabilitation work will proceed in carefully planned phases and will allow residents to remain in place if desired, ensuring continuity within this enduring Harlem community while advancing NYCHA’s goals for long-term sustainability and design excellence.
